CRA News October 2011

There is so much going on in the City right now, it’s hard to keep track!  Here’s just a very small sample:

Construction on Atlantic Boulevard from west of Federal Highway to A1A has begun

This project involves the reconstruction of Atlantic Boulevard from US Highway 1/ Federal Highway to A1A as well as the undergrounding of FPL and Comcast overhead facilities. Through a partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the CRA will build wider sidewalks, improve landscaping, and implement pedestrian lighting improvements throughout the corridor. FDOT will remove one travel lane from both the north and south sides of the boulevard. This will enable the CRA to construct wider sidewalks and create an enhanced pedestrian experience with outdoor seating and pedestrian-friendly features. The boulevard is intended to become a focal point for local residents and visitors alike.

NW 6th Avenue Improvements Project

The Blanche Ely/NW 6th Avenue Corridor project from Atlantic Avenue to NW 15th Street, and NW 6th Street from Dixie Highway to I-95, is the gateway for identifying Blanche Ely High School and the surrounding residential community. The project will be completed in 2-3 phases and will include landscape beautification, new transit shelters featuring designs compatible with county and city shelters, sidewalk and lighting improvements, and other beautification features. Work will include updating existing traffic circles, cleaning crosswalk pavers, and installing seasonal or holiday banners on existing light poles. In addition, the CRA will work with local businesses and property owners to clean up and remove excess debris; replace fences; and, conduct repairs to swale areas, etc. Lastly, funding will be used to install paver insets throughout the corridors.  The insets will be used to honor local pioneers by inserting their names within the insets.

Art in Public Places Initiative

The first Art in Public Places project has been completed. Local artist Dahlia Baker “yarn bombed” a pole in front of the CRA Business Resource Center located at 50 NE 1st Street in Old Pompano. The term public art refers to works of art in any media that has been planned and executed with the specific intention of being sited or staged in the physical public domain, usually outside and accessible to all. Make sure to stop by the Business Resource Center to check out this unique piece of art.

East CRA Streetscape Projects Update

The CRA Board awarded a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) to Burkhardt Construction, Inc. totaling over $13.5 million for planned streetscape improvements to Pompano Beach Boulevard, East Atlantic Boulevard, Atlantic Boulevard from Federal Highway to A1A , and Harbor Village. The GMP contract establishes a price for a specific scope of work and that price cannot be exceeded. These four projects will provide a more pedestrian-friendly atmosphere with new sidewalks, landscaping, street lights and the undergrounding of overhead utilities on Atlantic Boulevard and Pompano Beach Boulevard. The CRA contributed nearly $11.2 million to the GMP while the City contributed $2.346 million in funds which will be used to build a multi-purpose kiosk and water feature at the new Beach Plaza planned at the Atlantic Boulevard terminus. Funds will also be used to replace beach furniture and to add benches and bike racks along the corridors.
