An Interview with Candy Russo, Singing Sons Mom

Just a few of the Florida Singing Sons at the Spring 2011 concert

By Dawne Richards

After interviewing some of the boys in the Singing Sons, Pompano Today caught up with a parent of one of the boys.  Candy Russo’s son Ryan is currently a boychoir member.  She told us,  “Singing Sons has introduced Ryan to a whole different world of music, not just him but my other two kids as well.  They all appreciate all kinds of music, even symphonies, which I don’t think they would have had before, for the finer kind of music, rather than what they usually listen to.”

Collier City Update

CRA Consultant Bermillo Ajamil made a brief presentation to the NW CRA Advisory Committee in October and gave an update on proposed plans for future implementation throughout the community. This was a prelude to the presentation made to the CRA Board on October 18 seeking approval and future funding support for a variety of projects. Many of the proposed improvements reflect community input from a survey and two public meetings. The CRA is hopeful to be able to lead the City in this new round of activity for this community.

Grant Approved for Beloved Jukebox Diner, Returning in November

The CRA Board recently approved a Strategic Investment Program grant in the amount of $4,509 for the Jukebox Diner for tenant improvements to the property located at 2771 East Atlantic Boulevard in Harbor Village.  The Strategic Investment Program is available for interior aesthetic improvements and tenant improvements to existing buildings.  The Jukebox Diner is a modern rendition of the classic 50′s diner offering breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a specialty ice cream counter. The original Jukebox Diner was located on A1A in Pompano Beach until Hurricane Wilma destroyed the property in 2005. In the new location, locals and visitors alike will enjoy home-cooked meals in a fun and comforting atmosphere while listening to tunes playing on the Jukebox.  Planned improvements include constructing new walls to separate kitchen and dining areas, a new handicapped – accessible restroom, a new glass block counter, electrical work, plumbing work, and diner decor to make this currently vacant space usable for the Jukebox Diner. The restaurant is expected to open in November.
