This evening, we had the supreme pleasure of seeing Ambrosia, Player, and the Little River Band perform at the Pompano Beach Amphitheatre.
“Perform,” however, doesn’t seem like the right word. Earlier this week, we interviewed Wayne Nelson for our February issue, and he told us that “One of the biggest elements of this band being around for so long is that the live show is remarkable. There are still five people that walk up to a microphone and sing like it’s a horn section, like it’s an extra instrument. We never take anything for granted; every night turns into a sing along and a party and there are songs people have forgotten that were our hit songs and that builds momentum every night. And playing with Ambrosia and Player – this is not an oldies show, not a vintage show; it’s old and new mixed together with a ton of energy. I can’t say enough about how much fun we have and how much fun we have with the people who come to the show.”
Hmm…we thought to ourselves. This sounds like an awful lot of fun.
So, off we went. “Perform” was a vast understatement. Same with “remarkable.” It was a revival, but not in the traditional sense of the word. No, it was a revival of many other things: of fun (yes, he promised us fun, but this much fun? Wow). It was a revival of the spirit – of the spirit of music, and of a big block party, and of friendship.
More than that, even, it was a reminder that music, in the purest sense, can take you back. Back to a simpler time, maybe; a time when everyone knew everyone in the neighborhood, and you could have a rousing good time just about anywhere when the music’s right. Back to when you lost that girl. Or maybe when you found her.
And boy, was the music right. From the old to the new, from the familiar to the surprising, the music was, quite simply, remarkable. During our interview, Wayne told us how he believes that “I think there’s a little bit of musicality in everybody. I think it’s a rare person who doesn’t have any kind of love or innate musical talent.” While there was plenty of talent onstage at the Pompano Beach Amphitheatre, there was also plenty of musicality in the audience too. That sing along Wayne promised? Check. The party? Check. The energy? Oh, yes.
You can read our full interview with Wayne in our February issue. Until then, enjoy the music. Check out the Little River Band, and Player, and Ambrosia, online. And if you have the opportunity to a live show, well, what are you waiting for? It was everything we had hoped for, and so much more.
