The kids are home for the summer. Fabulous! Now what?
Ah, summer vacation! While you COULD just get a bucket of sidewalk chalk, Pompano has so many great and free or cheap things to do that it seems like a waste of sidewalk chalk, not to mention a waste of a summer, to spend summer right in front of your front door.
Free Thing Number 1: The beach – of course! What’s better when you’re a child than a day at the beach? Not much! You can grab a bucket or a pail, a beach shovel (even an old spatula will do), a towel, sunscreen, and head out! Tip: The beach is absolutely glorious in the early evening. Breezy, quiet, perfect.
Free Thing Number 2: Watch the Fishermen. Or the lighthouse. Or the boats. Or the people. Or the water.
OK, so you COULD fish, but we promised free! Any day or evening, head over to Inlet Park for a great opportunity to people-watch, get on the swings with your kids, watch them play on the playground, have a cookout (grills are available, as is one gazebo, and several picnic tables are scattered around the park). Evenings at Inlet Park should be part of everyone’s childhood summer memories.
Free Thing Number 4: Head over to Highlands Park for that old-fashioned summer feeling. Trees, grass, a playground – a simple yet satisfying outing for the whole family. As a matter of fact, choose any one of Pompano’s 50 parks.
Free Thing Number 5: Get in the game – or just watch! Billed as one of Pompano’s “most ulitized parks,” Ronald E McNair Park sits on 6.4 acres and offers two lighted basketball courts, lighted baseball/softball fields and football/soccer fields, picnic and program areas.
Free Thing Number 6: Check out the library. Yes, the library! All Broward County Library branches have great free or cheap children’s programs not just in the summer, but throughout the year. Pompano is home to several branches; check out the Jan Moran Collier City Learning Library or the Pompano Beach Branch for their summer programs, or the Main Library locations page for a full listing of all the programs available throughout the County.
Cheap Thing: Check out the open swim, afternoons from 1-4:30, at the City’s Aquatics Center in Pompano Community Park. Open swim is open for children every day of the week and costs just $0.53; adults pay just $1.06.
